Aaron Donald’s accuser, attorney offer apologies after video appears to clear Rams star

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald received apologies Friday from the man who alleged that Donald assaulted him outside a Pittsburgh nightclub last weekend and the man’s attorney.

The attorney, Todd J. Hollis, told Pittsburgh television station KDKA that his client, DeVincent Spriggs, wished to apologize after surveillance video of the Sunday morning incident appeared to show that Donald came to Spriggs’ aid as Spriggs was being kicked and punched.

“I wanted to make this statement public. And to extend an apology to Aaron for what he’s gone through, but I clearly know this was not him,” Hollis said.

Hollis told Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times that he, too, misidentified Donald.

“It’s my belief after viewing the video that the person involved in the altercation was not Aaron Donald,” Hollis told Klein. “It was somebody who resembled him.”

Hollis told Klein that he needed to quickly correct himself.

“We made these allegations publicly, so I believe once I received the information that it was not him, I believe that I should be public with that as well and do so immediately rather than later,” Klein quoted Hollis as saying.

Hollis said at a press conference Wednesday that he planned to file criminal charges against Donald.

In the video, which Pittsburgh TV station WPXI obtained Friday, Donald appeared to push away people who were assaulting Spriggs.

Donald’s attorney, Casey White, told Pittsburgh radio station KDKA on Friday morning that those people knew Donald and were defending him after Spriggs threw a bottle at the player to escalate an earlier confrontation at a party inside the club. White said the bottle struck Donald in the head.

White also said that Pittsburgh police told him in an e-mail that there was no video evidence yet of Donald attacking Spriggs. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that police declined to comment on White’s claim and added that they were still investigating the incident.

Spriggs reportedly suffered a concussion and an arm injury and received 16 stitches near his right eye.

Donald, 29, was born and raised in Pittsburgh and played collegiately at Pitt. White says that Donald lives in the city in the offseason.
