When Prince Harry booked a ticket to the U.K. to attend Prince Philip’s funeral, he reportedly left his return date up in the air, despite the fact that he had to leave Meghan Markle, now pregnant with the couple’s second child, behind in California. A source told Vanity Fair over the weekend that Harry “wants to get back to her as soon as possible,” but one report claims that a thaw in his relationship with his family means that he might extend his stay.
On Monday, the Sun reported that Harry is considering delaying his return until after Queen Elizabeth celebrates her 95th birthday on April 21—“if all goes well,” according to a source—after a two-hour conversation with Prince William and Prince Charles. Though Saturday’s service was socially distanced, Harry and William had a brief conversation when they left St. George’s Chapel and began the trek back to Windsor Castle, where they were joined by their father. According to the tabloid, their conversation sparked hopes that the brothers will be able to heal their relationship.
Before the funeral, Harry was quarantining at Frogmore Cottage, but according to the Mail on Sunday, his return to England was met with “a great deal of frostiness” from some family members, and he and Prince William only communicated by text. The Mail added that William had requested that he not stand next to Harry during the procession to the church, and that Prince Edward, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and Princess Anne did not acknowledge him before the service.
A source said that only one close family member reached out to him. “Ironically the only one who has expressed any sympathy towards him is Prince Andrew,” the insider said. “He knows from Sarah Ferguson—and now first-hand—how it feels to be the outsider, which Harry very much is.”
Despite the difficulties in his relationship with the rest of his family, Harry has remained on better terms with his grandmother, and Meghan told Oprah that they were able to speak to the Queen on the day that Philip was initially hospitalized in March.
