A month after rumors started circulating their relationship was over, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez officially announced their split on the Today show on Thursday morning. But apparently the two stars had actually already decided to call off their engagement last week following a discussion about their future.
The former couple decided to “go separate ways” during Rodriguez’s most recent trip to the Dominican Republic where Lopez is currently shooting her new film, according to a source who spoke to People. “They spent time together in the Dominican Republic last week and decided that it’s best to go separate ways. The split is very amicable.” The pair also confirmed they were committed to remaining on good terms in their statement announcing the breakup, saying, “We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so. We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have is to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.”
But while that source claims that the split was mutual and drama-free, E! News‘ source insists that the pop star “has not been happy for a while now.” They added that she’s “feeling at peace” with the breakup as “Once her trust is broken, there’s no turning around. She feels good about her decision because she knows A.Rod will still be in her life, just in a different capacity.” Lopez and Rodriguez are currently “very cordial,” but have no plans to see each other anytime soon.
The split may seem pretty final, but it seems the retired MLB player is still holding out hope for the future of their relationship. “He is respecting her wishes right now, but has high hopes they will get back together. He’s doing anything in his power to make J.Lo happy,” a second source said. Which also might explain Rodriguez’s post-breakup Instagram video in which he tagged his ex, showing off a number of a corner of his home filled with framed photographs of them together and their names written in a heart in the sand as Coldplay’s “Fix You” plays gently in the background.
