A NATURE CANADA WEBINAR

Have you heard the term Nature-Based Climate Solutions (NBCS) lately and are wondering what exactly it means? Nature Canada is working to increase awareness of these actions and how the concept can be realistically implemented within your community. Visit our campaign page for more information.

What are Nature-Based Climate Solutions?

In simple words, Nature-Based Climate Solutions (NBCS) are actions that work with and enhance nature to help address climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation. NBCS efforts can include:

  • Land and water management
  • New and expanded protected areas
  • Restoration of ecosystems
  • Utilizing natural infrastructure to adapt to climate impacts

By implementing Nature-Based Climate Solutions, we can increase natural carbon storage, lower greenhouse gas emissions from landscapes, and improve resilience to climate change.

At the same time, these activities  can restore and protect critical wildlife habitats which helps to address the mass species decline brought on by climate impacts, deforestation, and other human activities.

Many of these solutions can be implemented at the municipal or local level, including through local climate action plans, advocacy, and launching small-scale projects. To ensure climate plans protect and manage natural areas in ways that mitigate climate change and benefit biodiversity, it is crucial that every jurisdiction in Canada has a climate change action plan that includes Nature-Based Climate Solutions.

Nature Canada Webinar

On March 4th, 2021, Nature Canada hosted a webinar with over 240 participants about community-level Nature-Based Climate Solutions.

You can watch the recording of our webinar to hear the Nature Canada team discuss how local organizations can get involved in the implementation of Nature-Based Climate Solutions in their communities. The webinar also includes an in-depth overview of what Nature Canada is doing to support nature-based solutions across the country.
